Józef Gara worked as a miner and was a native speaker of Wymysorys, a language spoken in Wilamowice that had only 70 native speakers. He took it upon himself to create a writing system for the language, developing the Wymysorys alphabet, and began composing poetry in it. In 2003 he published 'Zbiór wierszy oraz słownik języka wilamowskiego' (A collection of poems and the dictionary of Wymysorys language). The following year he released an expanded work, 'Zbiór wierszy o wilamowskich obrzędach i obyczajach oraz słownik języka wilamowskiego' (A collection of poems and the dictionary of Vilamovian language), which included poems about local rites and customs. Also in 2004 he collected old Wymysorys songs, correcting and extending them with a view to releasing them. Between 2004 and 2006 he taught Wymysorys in a primary school in Wilamowice, helping to pass the language to a new generation.
